Blog 15: Metaphor Paper Topics
I am going to write the metaphor paper based on an article that I read from the Miami Student — ” J. Crew U?”
The main metaphor is ” Miami University is J. Crew U”, which is a well-known metaphor in the US. In terms of “X=Y” equation, the tenor is Miami University, and the vehicle is J. Crew U. The most straightforward interpretation of this metaphor is that Miami University is famous for a lot of “rich, preppy, white” boys and girls. Therefore, this metaphor highlights the characteristic of Miami University that the majority of the students are from upper class who are also very beautiful.
However, I consider this metaphor as a negative comment for Miami University. I feel the facts that it hides are more than the facts highlighted. Though I haven’t decided what my thesis statement is for this paper, generally I will start my paper from two aspects — materialism and lack of diversity. I feel these are the two major problems of Miami from this metaphor.
By the way, there is no offend to any Miami student. I just find this topic very interesting to write.

This is going to turn into a very interesting paper to read. I like your topic. It may be tough to write 4 pages on just one metaphor though

You’re right, this will be interesting. Any metaphor that reinforces stereotypes is worth looking at and will probably lead your reader to reconsider viewing Miami as J. Crew-U.

When I decided that I was coming to Miami, I heard so much of the “J Crew U.” and other things relating to Miami’s preppy and upscale reputation. I feel like you are off to a good start!

I think this is a great topic to write about. It seems a bit controversial and I think that will make the paper really intense and interesting.

This is a great topic because it is very applicable to life as a Miami student. There are many different perspectives you could take, you could talk about what life is like as a student here and how this metaphor shapes daily activities and attitudes, or you could talk about how this shapes the views of others who do not attend the university, and talk about how this metaphor leads to stereotyping. good luck!

I agree with the aspects of the negative view toward the Miami University students. I know it bugged me when I was instantly stereotyped by going here. great idea

I absolutely love your idea for the paper. There are so many associations that you can further consider and you will be able to construct a deep and thoughtful paper.

This is a really good idea for your paper. This should be fun for you to look into and write about!

I think this sounds really interesting and you could do a lot with the things this metaphor hides about Miami and its students.

This is a very good idea that is very relative to everyone at this school, you could not have picked a better topic. I am sure you can find many a metaphor on this topic, good luck.

This is a very interesting and funny topic for a paper. Many people do think of Miami as the preppy school. i would love to read your paper and see hwo you an analyzed the metaphor

Interesting topic! This preppy, rich kid stereotype is very prevalent at Miami. I feel that you could look at it from both an insider and outsider point of view. Most of the people that don’t go here look at this stereotype as a negative one, and most of the students that attend this university look at it as a positive one. You could go so many different ways with this paper I don’t feel like you will have a problem writing four pages.

I like the topic you chose, you should really take time to focus on what the metaphor is hidden which should be a lot.

This is a great topic to write about, it is something that affects us all along with other colleges and people that are labeled as something like this. I also think that you should talk to it from the perspective of kids here and how that label, and many other labels, are not true. You might want to consider something broader like labels themselves because i think you might run out of room with this one metaphor. But if you dont then good luck.

I have heard about Miami being called “The North Face’s best customer,” but I have never heard “J.Crew U” before. I find it interesting that this metaphor hides all of the negative associations it brings. It highlights that Miami students are generally seen as rich, preppy, and wear the according clothing. It hides that students who are seen in this way are generally white, showing a lack of diversity, snobby, arrogant, and disrespectful. Though I have seen this on campus, I feel that a few extreme people give our campus a bad reputation. As Booker T. Washington said to Coalhouse, your individual acts will undo more than ten thousand good acts.

I think this is a great topic for your paper. I definitely feel that this stereotype is common at our school but it is not the only one that we have. There is a lot to look at here. I have heard of “J. Crew U” many times and I feel that you can do a great analysis on this topic.

I don’t think anyone will take offense to this topic. If anything, I think you’ll be able to get someone’s attention by dealing with a topic that so many students can relate to.
